BEST SEASON

September to February

Climb a granite hill, eat breakfast at the top, and be home before the afternoon goes anywhere.

Nijagal Betta sits about 60 km from Bangalore, just off NH 48 past Dobbaspet, and it is one of the better short climbs in this direction. This easy to moderate trek runs about 3 km round trip, with shaded stretches giving way to open granite where grip matters more than stamina. You top out at around 1,083 m, where fort ruins run along the rim, cave temples to Hanuman and Shiva are still in use, and three rock-cut ponds sit exactly where they were cut. Breakfast happens up there, with enough time to eat it slowly and wander the summit before heading down. When you trek with Wanderophile, you climb in a group of eighteen at most, with a trek lead who knows which stones are worth stopping at.

Whether this is your first hill or your fiftieth, the climb is short enough to leave the rest of your Saturday intact. Nijagal Betta is worth the early start.

      • Around 1:30 PM: Back in the city, drops in reverse pick-up order (timing may vary by drop point and traffic)

  • Nijagal Betta is an easy to moderate trek and a sensible first hill for most people. You are looking at about an hour and a half of climbing, forty five minutes back down, and roughly 3 km of walking in total. The hill is not bare rock the whole way. There are shaded stretches, and then there are open granite sections where the sun gets at you properly, which is exactly why we start at 5 AM and are off the summit before midday.

Grip matters more than stamina here. The descent is the part people underestimate, because worn granite at a walking pace is where ankles go. If it has rained in the previous day or two, the rock stays slick longer than you would expect, and your trek lead will set the pace accordingly.

There is no drinking water source on the hill. Whatever you carry up is what you have, so 2 litres minimum, and more if you drink heavily in the heat.

  • September to February. The plateau cools off, the early light across the countryside is worth the alarm, and the rock is dry.

March to May is the one to skip. Open granite, thin shade and real heat make for a miserable descent even on a short hill.

June to August is workable. Rain here tends to come in bursts rather than settling in for the day, so a wet start often clears by the time you are climbing. Slippery granite is the real hazard, so monsoon departures are a weather call on the morning.

  • Shoes with good grip are the one non-negotiable, because the route runs over worn granite rather than mud trail and the descent is where people slip. Carry 2 litres of water minimum, since there is nothing to refill from on the hill. A cap and sunscreen for the open sections. Keep the pack small, 10L is plenty for a morning out.

  • We cap this group at 18, which on a summit this size is the difference between a morning out and a queue. Transport, breakfast and a trek lead who has walked this hill before are all in the ₹1199. You get picked up from your side of town, you are on the rock by quarter to eight, and you are home by early afternoon with the rest of your Saturday intact.

    • Currently, no permit is required for Nijagal Betta Trek. However, regulations can change, and we recommend carrying a valid government ID.

    • No. It is rated easy to moderate and is one of the shorter hill fort climbs near Bangalore, about an hour and a half up and forty five minutes down. The steep granite sections and the descent are the only real challenges, not the distance.

    • Yes and no. Plenty of listings get this wrong. Nijagal Betta is near Dobbaspet in Nelamangala taluk, about 60 km from Bangalore. Siddara Betta is a different hill near Koratagere in Tumakuru district, about 100 km away. But Nijagal Betta is also known locally as Nijagal Siddara Betta, which is where the mix-up starts.

    • About 60 km. The trailhead is right off NH 48, a short way past Dobbaspet town. Pick-ups start at 4:30 AM in HSR Layout and you are at the base by around 7:30.

    • Fort ruins, cave temples dedicated to Hanuman and Shiva, and three rock-cut water ponds that supplied the fort during sieges. The summit gives long views across the surrounding countryside.

    • Yes. We run it for ages 10 to 62, and the climb is short enough to be a reasonable first trek. The one thing beginners underestimate is the descent on worn granite, so shoes with grip matter.

    • No. There is no water source on the hill, so carry at least 2 litres. Breakfast is included and packed, and we eat it at the summit.

    • Do not stray from marked trails, avoid carrying plastic, do not disturb wildlife, and strictly avoid smoking/open fires.

Short, well-planned morning trek. Tasty 😋 breakfast on top of the hill, fort ruins and cave temples to explore. Our trek lead Bhushan set an easy pace and made sure we all stayed together throughout the trail. Everything from pickup to drop was well-organised and we were back to Bengaluru by afternoon. Would go again with Wanderophile. Nijagal betta is a great pick if you want a proper hike without losing an entire day.

This was my 3rd trek through trekking groups. I must say it was the best one so far. They organized it so well. If you are going solo you never feel it because they conduct some activities foe ice-breaking. I would recommend to take a trip through them.
