Step into the cloud kingdom of Kerala with the Meesapulimala Trek—your ticket to standing on the second-highest peak in the Western Ghats.
This isn't just a hike; it's the "Charlie" moment you've been waiting for. Guided by the forest department and our own crew, you'll rattle through tea estates in a jeep, walk through pine forests that smell like Christmas, and traverse the famous Rhodo Valley before reaching a summit that literally floats above the clouds.
Ready for a view that ruins all other views for you?
Meesapulimala’s moderate ~8 km trail packs a punch, rewarding your glutes with a sunrise that turns the sky purple and orange. You’ll stay in the rustic KFDC base camp, trade Wi-Fi for bonfires (weather permitting), and experience the raw, unfiltered beauty of Munnar minus the tourist crowds.
This trek is perfect for anyone looking to escape the Bangalore burnout, meet a tribe of like-minded weekend warriors, and find out if the "cloud bed" is real. (Spoiler: It is).
Meesapulimala Complete Trek Information

-
Evening pickup from your Bangalore point. Roll call, quick briefing, then an overnight drive toward Munnar. It's a long haul (roughly 460 to 490 km), so settle in.
-

-
Arrive in Munnar in the morning.
-
Freshen up and breakfast.
-
Collect the signed KFDC permits from the Munnar Forest Office, where your jeeps are assigned.
-
Off-road jeep transfer to the base camp (~24 km via Mattupetty and Aruvikkad), then a further 4 km jeep leg to Rhodo Valley.
-
Reach Rhodo Valley, settle into the base-camp tents, short acclimatisation walk if there's light, dinner and a campfire (weather permitting). Nights up here get into single digits, so this is where the warm layers earn their place.
-
Overnight in tents at Rhodo Valley.
-
-
Pre-dawn start with the KFDC guide. Trek across the eight hills to the Meesapulimala summit, aiming for the early light.
-
Grasslands, stream crossings, the Anayirankal lake view, and the long look across to Anamudi and the Tamil Nadu plains from the top.
-
Descend the same route to Rhodo Valley, jeep back down to Munnar, and begin the drive home [CONFIRM].
-
Early-Monday arrival in Bangalore, traffic depending.

-
Moderate. The Rhodo Valley route is about 8 km and takes most groups 4 to 6 hours, crossing eight successive hills rather than one long climb, so you're repeatedly gaining and losing height.
No ropes, no technical sections, but the altitude is real: you finish at 2,640 m, and the air is thinner and colder than anything on the Karnataka trails. A few pitches are steep, the descent on the far side is loose in places, and the whole thing is more tiring than the distance suggests because of the cumulative up-and-down.
If you can walk for a few hours on hilly ground with a light daypack, you'll manage it. Fit beginners are fine with preparation. What catches people out here isn't the gradient, it's the cold at the top and the early start, not the climb itself.
The window is roughly September/October to February. Post-monsoon into winter gives you the clearest skies, the best summit visibility and comfortable daytime walking, with cold nights at camp.
Avoid the summer months, when it's hot and hazy, and the monsoon, when heavy rain makes the trail slippery and access is frequently closed. Because the KFDC caps daily numbers, weekend passes go quickly, so book well ahead. If the Neelakurinji bloom is what you're chasing, note that it's a once-in-twelve-years event, not an every-season thing, so don't plan a trip around it unless it's actually a bloom year.
Whatever the month, confirm current access and conditions with the KFDC before you commit, since forest-department status can change.
You're heading to real altitude, so the cold-weather kit matters more here than on a typical Ghats trek.
-
Sturdy trekking shoes, broken in, with grip. Grassland and rocky sections don't forgive sneakers.
-
Serious warm layers. A proper fleece or down jacket is not optional. Rhodo Valley drops to single digits at night and the summit at dawn is colder still.
-
Rain gear. Poncho or rain jacket plus a backpack cover. Ghats weather turns fast.
-
Quick-dry clothing. Breathable tees and trek pants. Skip denim, it's heavy and cold when wet.
-
Lightweight daypack (20 to 30L) for water, snacks and a layer. Main luggage stays at camp.
-
At least 2 litres of water. No shops or stalls on the trail. Strict no-litter policy.
-
Power bank, since power at camp is limited.
-
Sun protection: cap, sunglasses, sunscreen. High-altitude sun is stronger than it feels.
-
Headtorch, for the pre-dawn start.
-
Trail snacks: energy bars, dry fruit, chocolate.
-
Toiletries and a small towel; eco-friendly where possible.
-
Dry sacks or plastic covers for wet gear and electronics.
-
Original government photo ID (Aadhaar / driving licence), mandatory for forest-department entry.
Wanderophile tip: pack light, but never skimp on the jacket. The one thing people regret on this trek is being underdressed for the summit dawn.
-
Yes. Access is controlled by the Kerala Forest Development Corporation (KFDC). Passes are booked online through the KFDC Ecotourism system, and the signed hard copy is collected at the Munnar Forest Office, where jeeps are assigned. We arrange all of this as part of the trip.
The KFDC allows a limited number of trekkers per day (roughly 40 to 60), and an entry pass covers one day and one night at Rhodo Valley. Weekend slots fill early, so book well in advance. We recommend confirming with us at least [CONFIRM] days ahead.
About 8 km via the Rhodo Valley route, 4 to 6 hours, moderate, crossing eight hills to the summit at 2,640 m. A few steep and loose sections, but no technical climbing.
At Rhodo Valley, reached by jeep from Munnar (~24 km to base camp, then ~4 km further). The trek is out-and-back with a steeper descent on the far side of the summit.
In KFDC-managed tents at the Rhodo Valley base camp. Basic, high-altitude camping with a campfire when weather allows.
Yes. A KFDC guide accompanies every group, and forest-department rules require it.
September/October to February. Avoid summer heat and the monsoon, when the trail is slippery and often closed.
No shops or stalls on the route. Meals are provided at camp; carry at least 2 litres of water for the trek itself.
Cold. Rhodo Valley nights drop into single digits and the summit at dawn is colder. Warm layers are essential.
Trekking with children (above 12) is possible for fit families, but avoid with very young kids or those with mobility issues.
It's a popular, regulated trek. The daily cap keeps numbers controlled, so it's never a mob, but it isn't a solitary trail either. Booking ahead is the real requirement.

Went on the Gangadikal, Merthi Gudda, and Kurinjal treks with Wanderophile, and it was a fabulous experience. The treks were organized really well, and everything ran smoothly from start to finish. Our trek leader Nagabhushan was very friendly, approachable, and shared a lot of knowledge about the Western Ghats, which made the journey even more enjoyable.
The stay arranged was comfortable, and the food was homely and delicious—a perfect way to end long days of trekking. Overall, Wanderophile made the whole trip fun, safe, and memorable. Highly recommend them if you’re looking for well-planned treks around the Western Ghats!

This was my 3rd trek through trekking groups. I must say it was the best one so far. They organized it so well. If you are going solo you never feel it because they conduct some activities foe ice-breaking. I would recommend to take a trip through them.
