Explore ancient fort ruins, discover secret false doors, and soak in panoramic views stretching to the Madhugiri monolith.

Standing atop Channarayanadurga, with the 16th-century Navadurga fort ruins stretching before you and the imposing Madhugiri monolith visible in the distance, you’ll understand why this trek is a favorite among history-loving adventurers from Bangalore. You’re joining a community of curious explorers, guided by locals who know every story these stones hold.

Whether you’re a first-timer looking to level up or a seasoned trekker chasing new horizons, the 5km trail and 2-3-hour journey offer just the right mix of challenge and reward. Ready to unlock a piece of Karnataka’s fortress heritage? Channarayanadurga is waiting.

  • Makalidurga sits comfortably in the easy-moderate bracket.

The full route runs about 5km up and down, takes 3-4 hours, and tops out at 1350m.

You don't need to be an athlete, but a basic level of stamina helps. Anyone who takes regular walks, does some light cardio, or spends time outdoors will breeze through most of it. The opening stretch beside the railway track is gentle and easy on the legs; things get more interesting as you approach the summit, where the path turns rocky and the gradient picks up.

What to expect on the ground: uneven granite underfoot; a brief stretch of boulder-hopping near the peak; tricky grip during and after the rains; barely any tree cover for most of the climb; zero refill spots, so pack at least 2 litres of water.

Our trek leads at Wanderophile have done this route many times over. They'll keep the group moving at a steady rhythm, offer a hand on the steeper bits, and make sure no one feels rushed.

To sum it up: a short, scenic climb of 5km in 3-4 hours that rewards you with one of the most photogenic summits near Bangalore. Show up rested, keep your spirits up, and the top is yours.

  • Thinking of heading to Makalidurga? The season you pick shapes the whole experience.

October to February (Winter): The sweet spot. Cool air (around 10°C–25°C), lingering greenery from the rains, dry footing, and sharp views all the way to the horizon.

March to May (Summer): Hot and exposed. With almost no canopy on the climb, the sun can be unforgiving — dawn starts are non-negotiable. The trade-off is thinner crowds and bright blue skies for your camera.

June to September (Monsoon): The hill turns lush and the lake views look straight out of a postcard, but the granite turns treacherous, overgrown grass swallows the trail in places, and the summit is often whipped by wind and mist. Go only with seasoned guides.

Worth knowing: Skip days right after a downpour — the rock surfaces stay slick for hours. Trekking is allowed only between 6:00 AM and 5:00 PM; overnight stays and night treks are off-limits.

Wanderophile Tip: We rate October to February as the ideal stretch for Makalidurga. That said, our trips run all year and we tailor each one to the conditions — drop us a line if you've got a particular date in mind!

Went on the Gangadikal, Merthi Gudda, and Kurinjal treks with Wanderophile, and it was a fabulous experience. The treks were organized really well, and everything ran smoothly from start to finish. Our trek leader Nagabhushan was very friendly, approachable, and shared a lot of knowledge about the Western Ghats, which made the journey even more enjoyable.

The stay arranged was comfortable, and the food was homely and delicious—a perfect way to end long days of trekking. Overall, Wanderophile made the whole trip fun, safe, and memorable. Highly recommend them if you’re looking for well-planned treks around the Western Ghats!

This was my 3rd trek through trekking groups. I must say it was the best one so far. They organized it so well. If you are going solo you never feel it because they conduct some activities foe ice-breaking. I would recommend to take a trip through them.
