A short, easy climb to a flat granite summit with sweeping views of the Adiyogi statue and the hills around Chikkaballapur.

Just 62 km from Bengaluru, Harihara Betta — also known as Kaurava Kunda for its ties to Mahabharata folklore — is one of the most laid-back treks near the city. There's no steep scramble, no technical bit, no jostling crowds. Just a gentle walk up a clear trail that opens out onto wide skies, rolling ridgelines, and a direct view of the towering Adiyogi statue at Isha Foundation in the distance.

The trail forks near the top: the left path leads to the main summit, the right goes to the Adiyogi viewpoint, and the straight one drops into a small valley before rising to a second hill. Whichever you pick, the reward is the same — clean air, big views, and a morning that feels far removed from the city.

Trek with Wanderophile and you'll have a friendly group and a trek lead who knows every turn. First-timer or seasoned hiker, you'll be back in Bangalore well before noon — easy day out, big payoff.

      • 7:00 AM: Reach the base. Short briefing, light stretches, and a quick distribution of trail snacks.

      • 7:15 AM: Begin the climb with your trek lead — a gentle, picturesque trail with two short uphill stretches.

      • 8:15 AM: Hit the summit! Wander the rocky top, catch the views of the Adiyogi statue, and click your share of photos.

      • 9:00 AM: Start the descent at an easy pace.

      • 9:45 AM: Back at the base. Hop into the vehicle and head toward Bangalore.

      • 10:15 AM: Breakfast halt at a local restaurant on the way.

      • 12:30 – 1:00 PM: Drop-offs in Bangalore — new friends, fresh stories, and the rest of the day still yours.

  • Harihara Betta sits firmly in the easy category — it's one of the gentlest trails you'll find near Bangalore.

The full route is roughly 3km up and down, wraps up in 2-3 hours, and finishes on a flat rocky summit.

You don't need any prior trekking experience. If you can manage a long walk in a park or a casual hike, you're more than ready for this one. The path is well-defined, gradients are mild, and there are no technical or steep boulder sections to worry about.

What to expect on the ground: a clear, mostly even trail; a few loose pebbles in places; very little tree cover; almost no shade once you're on the rocks; no water source along the way, so carry your own.

Our trek leads know every fork and viewpoint here. They'll set an easy pace, point out the Adiyogi vista at the right turn, and make sure first-timers feel right at home.

To sum it up: a short, scenic, low-effort trek of 3km in 2-3 hours that gives you a big payoff for very little sweat. Ideal for beginners, kids, and anyone who simply wants a calm morning out.

  • Thinking of heading to Harihara Betta? Each season here has its own flavour.

September to November (Post-Monsoon): Lush, green hills, fresh air, and clear skies — the landscape is at its prettiest right after the rains.

Late December to early March (Winter): The sweet spot for early-morning trekkers. Crisp temperatures, sharp visibility, and on the best mornings, a sea of clouds drifting just below the summit.

March to May (Summer): Bright and dry, with thin crowds. Sun exposure can be heavy by mid-morning, so an early start is key.

June to September (Monsoon): The rocks turn slippery and visibility drops on misty mornings. Doable with care, but not the most rewarding window for views.

Worth knowing: The trek finishes well before mid-morning anyway, so we always plan it as a sunrise / early-morning experience — that's when the hill is at its quiet best.

Wanderophile Tip: We rate late December to early March as the most magical stretch for Harihara Betta, especially for those rare cloud-bed sunrises. That said, we run trips through most of the year and tweak each one to suit conditions — drop us a message if you've got a particular weekend in mind!

  • You don't need a mountain expedition kit for this one — just the basics, packed well. Here's what you'll want with you:

    • Trekking or sports shoes with decent grip

    • A small backpack (10 litres is plenty)

    • Quick-dry layers: a comfortable tee, trek pants, and a light fleece for the dawn chill

    • Windcheater or light rain jacket

    • Cap or hat and sunglasses

    • Reusable water bottle (1.5–2L)

    • A couple of snacks of your own choice

    • Mini first aid kit and any personal meds

    • Sunscreen (SPF 30+)

    • Hand sanitiser and tissues

Wanderophile Tip: Travel light. The whole trail rewards a calm, unhurried pace — and a lighter pack makes that even easier.

    • No permit is needed and there's no entry fee — Harihara Betta is open to all. We do recommend carrying a valid government ID for any roadside checks.

    • The trail covers roughly 3km round trip and takes 2-3 hours, with a near-flat summit. We rate it easy — one of the most beginner-friendly treks near Bangalore.

    • Late December to early March is hard to beat for clear sunrise views and cloud beds. September to November is great if you love post-monsoon greenery. We run trips through most of the year.

    • The trail itself is straightforward, but a guide adds real value — they'll point out the fork to the Adiyogi viewpoint, share the legend behind Kaurava Kunda, and make sure the group sticks together. Every Wanderophile trip includes a trek lead.

    • The trail starts at the base near Hariharapura village, close to Chikkaballapur. We handle pickup and drop from set points in Bangalore.

    • At a fork along the trail, the right path leads to a quiet spot that gives you a clear view of the Adiyogi statue at Isha Foundation in the distance. On evenings, you can even catch glimpses of the Adiyogi Divya Darshanam light show from up here.

    • There are no shops, stalls, or water points on the route. We'll hand out light snacks — a banana plus dry fruits or similar — at the base before the climb. Breakfast is sorted on the way back, at a local restaurant. Carry at least 1.5–2L of water of your own.

    • Yes, motivated beginners can attempt this trek, though some prior physical activity helps. If you walk regularly or exercise occasionally, you should manage well. Our guides are experienced in supporting first-time trekkers.

    • Absolutely — Harihara Betta is one of the few treks near Bangalore that genuinely suits children and older adults. As long as you're comfortable with a slow uphill walk, you'll be just fine.

    • Yes, and it's the highlight of the trip! On clear winter mornings, you may even spot a soft layer of clouds resting below the summit.

    • Do not stray from marked trails, avoid carrying plastic, do not disturb wildlife, and strictly avoid smoking/open fires.

Went on the Gangadikal, Merthi Gudda, and Kurinjal treks with Wanderophile, and it was a fabulous experience. The treks were organized really well, and everything ran smoothly from start to finish. Our trek leader Nagabhushan was very friendly, approachable, and shared a lot of knowledge about the Western Ghats, which made the journey even more enjoyable.

The stay arranged was comfortable, and the food was homely and delicious—a perfect way to end long days of trekking. Overall, Wanderophile made the whole trip fun, safe, and memorable. Highly recommend them if you’re looking for well-planned treks around the Western Ghats!

This was my 3rd trek through trekking groups. I must say it was the best one so far. They organized it so well. If you are going solo you never feel it because they conduct some activities foe ice-breaking. I would recommend to take a trip through them.
