Tucked deep inside the Kudremukh National Park and far from the usual trekking crowd, the Gangadikal Trek is the Western Ghats' best-kept secret—and Wanderophile is taking you straight to it. Picture this: a quiet zig-zag climb through shola forests and rolling grasslands, the kind of silence you can actually hear, and a summit ridge that opens up to a 360° spread of Karnataka's most iconic peaks.

From the top of Gangadikal (1458 m / 4,806 ft), you'll spot the unmistakable horse-faced Kudremukh peak, the Kurinjal ridge across the valley, Valikunja in the distance, the shimmering Lakya Dam backwaters, and on a clear day, even the ghostly outlines of the abandoned Kudremukh mining town. It's the kind of view that makes you forget which week of work you were stressing about.

What makes Gangadikal special? It's still off the radar. The Forest Department only recently opened this trail to trekkers, which means small groups, untouched paths, and zero selfie-stick traffic jams at the summit. Pair that with a cozy homestay, home-cooked Malnad meals, and Wanderophile's signature group vibe, and you've got yourself a weekend escape that genuinely feels like an escape.

Perfect for first-timers ready to graduate from city walks, returning trekkers chasing fresh trails, and solo travellers looking for their next tribe. Lace up—Gangadikal is waiting.

Gangadikal Complete Trek Information

      • 9:00 PM: Meet your trek leader and fellow wanderers at the designated Bengaluru pick-up point (Majestic / Yeshwanthpura / Goraguntepalya).

      • Quick roll call, ID verification for forest permits, and a friendly orientation on what the next 48 hours look like.

      • Board your non-AC tempo traveller with pushback seats. Music plays, intros happen, and by midnight you'll already know half the group's life stories.

      • Overnight: On the road. The city dissolves; Chikkamagaluru's coffee country pulls you in.

      • 6:00 AM: Roll into a quiet Malnad homestay tucked among coffee plantations near Samse. Freshen up, breathe in the wet earth and woodsmoke.

      • 7:30 AM: Hot filter coffee and a hearty South Indian breakfast.

      • 8:30 AM: Pack your steel-box lunch, do a final gear check, and transfer by jeep to the Kudremukh Forest Office.

      • 9:00 AM: Permit formalities at the forest office. Meet your authorised forest guide and begin the gentle drive-in to the trailhead.

      • 9:30 AM: Trek starts. The first stretch is a peaceful jeep track through shola forest—dappled light, birdsong, and the occasional Malabar giant squirrel performing acrobatics overhead.

      • 11:30 AM: The trail opens up. Grasslands roll out in every direction, and the zig-zag ascent to the summit ridge begins. Pace yourself; the views are worth the climb.

      • 1:00 PM: Summit Gangadikal Peak (1458 m / 4,806 ft). Spread your packed lunch with a 360° panorama—Kudremukh's horse-faced silhouette to one side, Kurinjal across the valley, Valikunja and Kyatanmakki in the distance, and the Lakya Dam backwaters glittering far below.

      • 2:30 PM: Begin the descent along the same trail. Spot wildlife if you're lucky—deer, lion-tailed macaques, and giant squirrels are regulars.

      • 5:00 PM: Back at the trailhead. Jeep transfer to homestay.

      • 6:00 PM: Hot chai, snacks, and the universally agreed best feeling in the world: dry socks after a trek.

      • 8:00 PM: Home-cooked Malnad dinner—rice, ghee, sambar, palya, and the kind of mango pickle that ends arguments.

      • Weather permitting: bonfire, mafia game, and a few rounds of "let's all promise to do this every month.

      • 7:00 AM: Wake to birdsong, mist, and the smell of fresh filter coffee.

      • 7:30 AM: Breakfast at the homestay.

      • 8:30 AM: Check out, farewell to your hosts, pile into the traveller, and start the journey back.

      • 8:45 AM: Quick stop at the Kalaseshwara Temple, an ancient Shaiva shrine that's worth a quiet 20 minutes for the architecture and the river views alone.

      • 9:10 AM: Head to the Kalasa Hanging Bridge—a scenic suspension bridge over the Bhadra River, perfect for slow photos and slower conversations.

      • 1:00 PM: Lunch: On the highway (self-sponsored; we'll stop at a clean, reliable eatery).

      •
      • 8:00–10:00 PM: Estimated arrival in Bengaluru, depending on Sunday-evening traffic.

      • Hugs, group selfies, and the inevitable WhatsApp group rename: "Gangadikal Gang."

  • Gangadikal sits firmly in the easy-to-moderate bracket—doable for fit first-timers, satisfying for seasoned trekkers, and forgiving enough that you won't be limping into Monday's stand-up.

The round trip is roughly 12 km and takes 5-6 hours of actual trekking time. The first half is gentle: a flat forest jeep track that lets you find your rhythm. The challenge kicks in on the zig-zag climb to the summit ridge—a short but steep stretch that will get your calves talking. There's no rock-climbing, no rappelling, no scrambling—just a steady uphill push that rewards patience.

What makes Gangadikal beginner-friendly is the absence of exposed cliffs or technical sections. The path is clearly marked, the gradient is manageable, and your forest guide and Wanderophile trek leader will set a pace that works for the whole group. We stop for water, photos, and the occasional "look-at-that-bird" moment.

That said, fitness still matters. If you can comfortably walk 5-6 km on flat ground without huffing, you'll handle Gangadikal beautifully. If you've been sedentary, start brisk-walking or stair-climbing for 2-3 weeks before the trek—your knees will write you a thank-you note on the descent.

Bottom line: Gangadikal is a "challenging enough to feel proud, easy enough to enjoy" trek. It's the perfect entry point to the Kudremukh range.

    • Quick-dry clothing: Breathable tees, trek pants, and a light fleece or jacket for chilly hilltop winds

    • Rain gear: Poncho or rain jacket (essential during monsoons), plus a backpack cover

    • Hat/cap & sunglasses: For when the sun decides to show up

    • Yes. Forest Department regulations require an authorised guide for every trekking group inside the park. This guide is included in your Wanderophile package.

Went on the Gangadikal, Merthi Gudda, and Kurinjal treks with Wanderophile, and it was a fabulous experience. The treks were organized really well, and everything ran smoothly from start to finish. Our trek leader Nagabhushan was very friendly, approachable, and shared a lot of knowledge about the Western Ghats, which made the journey even more enjoyable.

The stay arranged was comfortable, and the food was homely and delicious—a perfect way to end long days of trekking. Overall, Wanderophile made the whole trip fun, safe, and memorable. Highly recommend them if you’re looking for well-planned treks around the Western Ghats!

This was my 3rd trek through trekking groups. I must say it was the best one so far. They organized it so well. If you are going solo you never feel it because they conduct some activities foe ice-breaking. I would recommend to take a trip through them.
